Architecting Aviation

To remain globally mobile, we need affordable aviation, also in the future. And yet, we must minimise our carbon footprint also when flying. It is possible to reduce the impact of aviation drastically, while remaining economically viable – in time to meet the EU’s climate goals.

This is one of the central outcomes of the EXACT project. EXACT stands for “Exploration of Electric Aircraft Concepts and Technologies” and is one of the biggest comprehensive sustainable aviation studies undertaken by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR).

The goal of EXACT is to identify how future aircraft should be designed, by which technologies they should be powered and how they should be operated to achieve the ambitious climate goals.

In EXACT, 20 DLR institutes jointly analyse and compare various technologies (hydrogen, batteries, sustainable aviation fuels, etc.) and digitally integrate them into future aircraft configurations. To identify the most promising aircraft concepts, we look at the aircraft’s overall climate impact during its entire life cycle. Therefore, amongst others global flight routes, energy sources, airport and energy infrastructure are subject of research.
